Dan Berkeland, owner of Back Porch Bakery has a passion for creating locally made products that brings a sense of community to the Central Coast. After working as a cook in Italy and teaching cooking classes upon returning to the United States, Dan decided he would bring the Italian sense of community and ownership to the Central Coast through bread making.
Dan began his involvement in the startup world after opening a bakery that operated right out of the comfort of his own home. Dan never
advertised, Back Porch Bakery became a local hit through loyal customers and word of mouth. Back Porch Bakery expanded, and opened its commercial kitchen space in 2011 in San Luis Obispo. This year, Dan opened a retail bakery at the Carlton Hotel in Atascadero that is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
The Cal Poly CIE SBDC supported Dan through providing him with business consulting and finding him customized software technology. Having access to such technology has given Dan more time to focus on his business without having to worry about technical glitches. SBDC Consultants, Chuck Intrieri and Jeff Wade, have provided Dan with theĀ support needed to assist with the business expansion.
Dan plans to run his retail business out of the Carlton Hotel with the same ideology as when he first began the bakery in his home by focusing on one product and customer at a time. Check it out for yourself and try all the delicious products that Dan has to offer!
